Another James Ogilvie adventure--more bloodspillings of the kilted 114th Highlanders regiment on the North-West Frontier of India during the days of Gunga Din as insidiously insurgent Indians again rise up to swipe at Victoria's rule. And again MacNeil's utterly impassive humor about the regiment's impossibly grave and olympian standards of discipline adds toothsome touches. As ever, Ogilvie is in hot water, awaiting court-martial for entering a defile without proper reconnaisance, and for breaking out of arrest. This time the rebels are arising in one province while invaders glower from the north. Ogilvie's regimental colonel has been replaced by Lord Brora, an insane disciplinarian and monster of bristling egotism, who is likely to march them all into an unholy slaughter--which Ogilvie tries to avoid. Will Ogilvie be drummed out? Not bloody likely. Sterling bravura all the way.
