A chronicle of captains, crews and Cargoes that have been done in by the erratic gales of the Great Lakes. Mr. Boyer strives mightily to impute a supernatural aura to almost every incident but in actuality there seem to be few spectre steamers available. There was the young wife who had the prophetic dream that she and her husband wouldn't survive the crossing--they didn't. And there were two Indians impelled mysteriously back to an island where they discovered the only two survivors of one of the lake's worst disasters. And there was the logical forewarning one Mrs. Napier had about her son's career in shipping--she'd almost lost him in a capsized vessel at the age of four. . . she definitely lost him as a young man. The author's cliches cling like crustaceans to the stories Milch are weird composites of heavy research and gross speculation. For the Ancient Mariner?
