MAKE WAY FOR LUCIA

E. F. Benson died in 1940, but Lucia and her arch-rival Miss Mapp live on in the seven short novels (the complete Luciana) collected here--their first hard-cover publication. Queen Lucia introduces the bossy, pushy, exuberantly evil leading lady, and later adventures take her from one South of England country town (Riseholme) to another (Tilling), allowing her to do teatime battle with Miss Mapp and revel with her decidedly odd beau, Georgie. Food, gardening, gossip, no children (""Children are so sticky. . . 'specially after tea""), the advent of the wireless, and running gags of the ho-ho variety--is this what made England great? No, 'tis what made England laugh (Noel Coward was a devout fan), and Americans with a taste for lobster a la Riseholme (Gilbert Seldes: ""Lucia is magnificent!"") are now given full opportunity to follow suit.
