For the author won a gilt (female pig) at a flower show and lost her heart to Mr. Mountjoy (sex didn't matter for naming) and in raising him for show covered the year's doings at her home. There is the house and food and drink, the harvest and Christmas excitement, and the grooming of her masterpiece, after being bred and having a litter, for the local prizes. And there are run-ins with her competent, sometimes caustic husband, to-do with neighboring dignitaries, pantomime and regional customs which end up with Mr. Mountjoy's death in the terrific heat at the first show. A very domestic diary which has a well-bred charm.
