The text, by Nancy Newhall, has that rare combination of an idea sustained and strengthened by the poetic beauty of a rhythmic text. The end result is a unity of concept, execution and dedication. Adams has been capturing the wilderness with his camera for years, and while the majority of the superb photographs are Far Western in locale, there is a breadth of vision that contains the depredation of man against nature whether the scene be city slums, agricultural wastelands or mountain vastnesses. The Sierra Club which backed the venture, was founded by John Muir for the purpose to which this book is contributed.
