by E. Stuart Bates ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 17, 1937
An odd book, which the author frankly acknowledges ""aims mainly at introducing writers whom I like to readers who would wish to know them."" He teachers as he goes, tempting to read in full the books he quotes so freely. He uses his quotations to illustrate descriptive and suggestive writing, to show the different use of materials and the style which most effectively portrays such phases of personal experience as growing up, adventure, being rich or being poor. Valuable to those interested in the analytical approach to biography and to the study of literature from a fairly popular angle. Not a book for entertainment primarily. Useful for reading groups, study groups in clubs, courses in literature, etc.
