The supersensitive nose belongs to new kid Willie Sandowski, who can't find his new catcher's mitt but knows his Mom packed it because he detects a trace of artificial leather in the carton. Gumshoe Jack McGurk offers to make the missing mitt his first case if Willie will donate his nose to the proposed McGurk detective agency, and narrator Joey Rockaway glibly relates the outlandish ruses the three ten year-olds devise as an excuse for Willie's sniffing all the suspects' hands. But most kids will have spotted the Hernshaws' dog Sammy as the villain from his first appearance very early on, and will keep turning the pages only because this moves along so easily and makes so very few demands.
