THE DRAGON THAT LIVED UNDER MANHATTAN

Suitably glib for its read-aloud look (7fl x 9fl) and begun with irresistible dispatch: ""Once upon a time there was a Dragon that went into hiding under Manhattan. And once upon a time there was a prince who went dragon hunting all under Manhattan. And once upon a time there was a boy called Jimmy who lived in Manhattan and lost a front tooth and met a Prince the very next day."" For a while it gets better, mocking in a friendly way ""such fairy-tale stuff,"" but as soon as the dragon starts making a deal with the Mayor, Police Force, and city officials whereby he'll control and improve the below-ground sector of New York, the whimsy becomes too concrete and caves in. . . . With drawings that could have been sharper and wherefores that could have been wiser, a hokey Hildick this time.
