Companion volume to La Meri's Spanish Dancing (see P. 211) but I found it a much more interesting book, with more appeal for the average reader who might not be profoundly interested in folk dancing. For this is virtually a dance cruise of the Caribbean -- with lots of color and incident and drama, with details of backgrounds of the dances, but also of native customs, religious festivals and so on. Haitian voodoo, , Cuban rumba, Jamaican obeah, these and many others sacred, secular and social types of dance patterns take on meaning, and throw light on the native cultures. in his research by resentment and suspicion, by regulations of police and he still managed to collect an enormous amount of first hand material, and to the ancers in action.
