THE DOG IT WAS THAT DIED

The death, in a traffic accident, of Bretton- an academic man, and the fatal submersion, in a bathtub, of his daughter, leave no proof but arouses some suspicion of murder for Macdonald of the Yard. There is the question of the dead man's capital-exhausted; the locked cupboards in his London house and the country house he had purchased under an alias; the alteration in his character- and activities- since the war, all of which find their answer behind an iron curtain. A fairly close enigma, pursued with pertinent precision.
