THE OTHER BONE

Still another wordless, essentially vacuous incident--as a dog dreams of a bone, wakes to find itself boneless, rummages for one in a garbage can, makes off with it . . . and, looking at its reflection in a pool (you can guess what's coming), drops the bone it has to seize the reflected one. Does it get back its own bone? Young stretches that out, like everything else (or there'd be no book), but the answer is no--although some children may be puzzled by the last-page sight of the bone, resting by what is presumably meant to be seaweed. Hardly worth a single skip-through, the dog's exaggerated antics notwithstanding. (Rendered in Young's usual velvety shadings, they look incongruous, and more-than-necessarily absurd.)
