by Edison Marshall ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 16, 1964
This is the story of those colonists who settled Roanoke Island in 1587 and then disappeared, but not from further speculation through the centuries to follow. The main protagonist of Mr. Marshall's huge cast is Martyn Sutton, the ambitious son of an English peasant who rises to success and royalty as stepson to an Indian chief in the Okefenokee swamp. What happened to the Lost Colony? They fled to Florida under threat of massacre by one tribe and joined another tribe into which they were completely assimilated, a conjecture-into-possibility which the historical fiction form permits. It will also be acceptable to Mr. Marshall's long established readership, in spite of the book's minimal characterization and rampant periphrasis.
