When Nicolo Polo returns with his brother from a fabulous journey to the realm of Kublai Khan, he disclaims Marco as his son and dubs him the son of his wife's lover. The falsehood of his proclamation is ground for a deadly enmity between the two men which Marco uses to fulfil his aim of returning with the Polo caravan to the court of the Khan. In Venice there are the lessons with the old Arabian scholar, the adventure with a dying leper which leads to Miranda, virgin slave girl whom Marco reluctantly sells for the capital he must provide for the trip. On the journey there are raids, Arghun loving, treachery, the saving of a Moslem caravan from which Miranda is miraculously one of the rewards, but this time in Nicolo's keeping.
