DYNAMITE AND PEACE, THE STORY OF ALFRED NOBEL

The paradox inherent in the dual contributions of Alfred Nobel, the investor of dynamite and the founder of the Nobel peace prize, makes up the core of this straight-forward biography of the millionaire inventor. Himself, a man of paradoxes, he was intensely warm, but lived the solitary life of a genius. Dedicated to peace, he gave man one of the most lethal weapons at his disposal. Though Edith Patterson Meyer handles her subject with scholarly precision, her account of Nobel's life from his childhood in Sweden to his lonely death in San Remo is so unadorned with dramatic device as to make this a valuable, but frequently monotonous, biography.
