NKWALA

A twelve-year-old Spokan Indian boy feels the strong surgings of maturity, but cannot find a way to satisfy himself or his gods of his right to adult status in the tribe. When his people move West, Nkwala's courage prevents war between the Spokans and the Okawangons, and amidst the beating festival drums, he is proclaimed a man. A sense of poetry and characterization give fictional force, here, to the intrinsically interesting subject of life among the Spokan.
