A book which appeared originally in 1942, but the many changes in the total therapeutic picture of mental hospitals have necessitated the revision here, and the fact that 1 out of 10 undergo mental illness at some time indicates the continuing demand for a book such as this. Mrs. Stern assumes that hospitalization will be involved (and advises that it is the safest, shortest means of dealing with mental illness) and her handbook covers the questions of state versus private hospitals; the trip there and the admission; the types of treatments which may be used and activities which should be available; the family's role during this period- letters, visits, etc; and the care of the patient after the discharge with the possibility of recurrences and relapses.
