From rags to riches via the tee-offs, fairways, putting greens (and sand traps) of the world, here is the autobiography of America's golfing great, the man who outshines, outdrives, outmashies and outputts the rest. It makes highly popular copy as, with many a joke and anecdote, it maneuvers its way through the tournaments, through game development and through the abundant experiences with other greats of the world that were a natural outcome of Hagen's career. He began in Rochester, (where his father was a blacksmith) as a caddy and attributes his head start in skill to the lax social laws of the day which permitted boys to go to work young. By the time he was 19 he was pro for the Rochester club. From then on it was merely a case of waiting for one's natural rewards for after the break of World War I, Hagen went on to become tops in the twenties and thirties, in Europe, America, Japan- anywhere golf was played. The story is mostly of golfers, golfing and prize matches but there are other incidents- the acquisition of a Madam X (Cadillac), a brief stint in Hollywood and so forth. All of these tally up and if they are shot through with an unabashed pride, it is the kind people take the way they do the drink at the 19th hole.
