HISTORY OF WORLD ART

An achievement in clarity and condensation, which should serve admirably as an introduction to a history of world art, rather than as a rounded study in itself. The format of the book is unusual: the 313 pages of illustrations come first, in chronological order, so that they constitute a graphic record in themselves, while supplying illustration (through cross reference) for the text pages following. The arts are here interpreted in terms of history and accepted concepts of criticism. Concentration on painting, sculpture and architecture of civilization in Europe, North America and Asia necessarily precludes discussion of subsidiary and minor art developments. The major historical facts set the background for the main periods, with emphasis on centuries most significant in culture:- the Age of Pericles, the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque periods, the Italian Renaissance, the changes in the 19th century under industrial and urban cultures. Miss Mahler has made a significant contribution in her chapters on the great cultures of Asia. Glossary- suggested reading lists, art maps, chronologies, and index add to the value as a reference tool.
