A new title in the American Heritage Series: A beautiful sampling of paintings and photographs are balanced with the history of New York State's most famous canal system. In addition to the political and economic aspects involved in the building and operation of the Erie Canal, there are the songs, stories and cartoons about it. Some labeled and explained engineering drawings clearly show the geographic and mechanical problems the builders conquered and there is much information about life aboard the packets, both for ""canawl"" people and for passengers. As usual for this series, it is top-notch non-fiction with outstanding color reproductions. Suggestions for Further Reading.
