THE VIEW FROM DANIEL PIKE

If the conversion of films into books is a dubious process at best, the reconstitution of a TV series into hard cover is still more reprehensible (including Charteris' Saint). Here Daniel Pike, Investigations and Debt Collections, seen on BBC, is Boyd's creation re-worked by old pro Bill Knox. There are five assorted episodes dealing with murder and less sudden death (cancer and a stroke), robbery, some troubles among the ""tattie howkers"" (potato farmers), a real Lady's search for her addict son and an evil if sanctimonious man's attempt to find his daughter. Pike's got nothing on Kojak even if the Glasgow gutteral is as hard as slag.
