by Edward de Bono ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1972
This is the son of Po, de Bono's gimcrack Vonnegutian philosophy, featured in Mechanism and Mind, 1969) which ""can unlock latent creative reserves"" or ""can be used as a laxative,"" packaged, marketed, and delivered. As a slogan to startle the bugbears of bureaucracy, opt for ""Po"" in lieu of ""Boo."" Po is an alternative to ""YES/NO."" Its three steps, PO-1, PO-2 and PO-3, dwell upon the simple premise that we should look beyond our limitations. The book is organized like a motor vehicle manual, only wackier, almost parodic. Among its categories: arrogance of logic, thinking is different, ambulance and sheep, three fallacies, the existence of God, the Jell-O system, creativity is too vague, computers cannot laugh, salad, and uptight. It's easy to be indulgent toward the book, as toward anything we feel superior to, and there is a sportive Esquire magazine type quiz at the end, but de Bono actually believes most of what he postulates, eclipsing the genuine humor with more genuine pietism. The philosophy has had some converts so we leave you with its alternative, YES/NO.
