It is Matthew Calbraith Perry this time, brother of Oliver. At 14 he was the youngest midshipman in the service. He served in the War of 1812. He served in -- or off the coast of --Africa. He had his share in the Santa Ana mix-ups in Mexico. He was sent to be very polite -- quite overwhelming so -- to the sensitive Japanese. His biographer has done a good job.
