YOUNG RIDER MEETS A CHALLANGE

Jim Watson and his mare, Lady, from Young Rider of the High Country (1959) become involved once again in the problems of their ranch. A large section of the Rafter 77 grazing land is being withdrawn by the National Forest, and to maintain the place the Watsons have to be able to scrape up enough money for some neighboring land before it is placed on sale to the public. The logical way to earn the money-Jim decides- is to enter his family's Hereford calves in the Denver Stock Show. Jim's determination to go to Denver is bolstered by the knowledge that the only other foreseeable way to solve the problem is to sell Lady. Despite numerous crises, the cattle are taken to the show, where they earn first prize. The descriptions of the work done on a cattle ranch are realistic. The tired plot is somewhat alleviated by the convincing action.
