This third volume in The Classics introduces us to Christian thought of the fourth century Church Fathers, especially Athanasius, Gregory of Nazianus and Gregory of . Their writings were colored by the Arian controversy which came to a head at the Council of (325 A.D.) and reflect the attempt of the theologians of that era to formulate a doctrine about the person of Christ which would clearly indicate that Christ was both God and Man. As that debate has never been fully resolved, the discussion carried on in this volume has a degree of timeliness not possessed by some of the other volumes in the Library. Nevertheless, the chief value of these scholarly volumes is to place in the bands of students of church history the basic historical documents in a convenient form and in the English language.
