Away from United States' shores, Gilbert follows the path of the new order of Americans Europe particularly in the life of Michael Jones Stoddard who has been commissioned to install a supermarket in Paris. Eager, impatient and bemused in his dedication to the job on hand, his personal life has had many flaws and these become concentrated when he meets , greatly and luxuriously raised by a family not her own. This ""walking example of chaos"" has for a background business concepts of implanting American technology, progress and comfort aboard plus the concomitant conflicts with an inherited way of life, and is understanding in its coverage of the disturbances that result, even to the falling in love with a kind of life that is doomed to be changed.
