CHIPMUNKS ON THE DOORSTEP

An affectionate observer reports on the habits of chipmunks, especially those half dozen or so who live within ten feet of his terrace and whom the author recognizes individually and refers to by name. Though his observations are supported by purposive reading and concur with modern ethology, the approach is that of an old-fashioned naturalist: ""Obviously, Chippy is a born digger and loves his work,"" we are told at one point, and at another that ""any problem not included in the chipmunk's book of instructions seems to baffle him."" Frequent headings such as ""teeth,"" ""brains,"" ""swimming,"" and ""drinking"" make the book easy to scan, but its tone invite more leisurely perusal.
