HIDDEN HEROINES: Women in American History

Most of these ""hidden"" heroines have been rescued and rehabilitated several times over, though Landau's foreshortened history--from Jamestown to Carrie Chapman Catt in 88 illustrated pages--does include a few we haven't met before, like Eliza Lucas of South Carolina who experimented with indigo growing and proposed herself to Charles Pinckney. In spite of chapters with titles such as ""Heroic Housewives,"" this is basically a celebrity roster and the commentary can be silly (of woman plantation managers, Landau exclaims ""These remarkable colonial women were actually America's first hotel managers!""). Just serviceable.
