Newbery Award winner, Eleanor Estes, updates the Pye family of her prize winning book, Ginger Pye with a change of scene. Now they are at Fire Island in Long Island Sound, where Mr. Pye, the ornithologist, has gone to track down a reported and unprecedented puffin. A fractured foot incapacitates their father, so the Pye children and their dog, Ginger, act as aides-de-camp. Before summer's end the children have added a stray kitten, who quickly learns to typewrite, to their active family and restored a rare, lost pygmy owl to Mr. Bish, the man entrusted with its safe transport. Some of the whimsy is engaging; sometimes it is strained. Edward Ardizonne's cozy vignettes sharpen the images of family fun in an attractive setting.
