Professor Duckett of Smith College has written what is probably the definitive biography of the 8th century English scholar and theologian who had great influence upon the slowly developing mind of Europe during the early Middle Ages. Alcuin was a teacher, an editor of text books, a student of both ancient classical literature and of sacred writing. Raised in the Cathedral School of York, he left the ""home of scholars and paints, the center of intellectual life"" when the Emperor Charles called him to head the Palace School at Aachen and to ""educate the clergy and people of Frankland"".
