THE SCIMITAR OF SALADIN

A seriously written mystery, set in the Mehdi tribe lands of Persia, a district the author knows first hand, is centered around young Blian Caldwell whose father is a missionary and who has decided to spend the summer of 1924 as assistant to Dr. Lindstrom, an archelogist. Digging in the Kooram Hills they uncover a valuable sword which they plan to donate to a museum. But Rutbah Kahn, the fiery leader of the Mehdi has other plans for the scimitar, a relic important to the history of his people and as it gets out of Bliss' and Lindstrom's hands there is chase and captivity- a harried time in which the suspicions of Bliss are roused in many different ways. The sword is found and sent to a proper resting place, but more important to the story are the characters portrayed- Muley, whom Bliss distrusted; young Sefid who finds a future; and the old darvish who has much to say of Persia and its way. Good.
