One of those distasteful, intelligent stories of a leech and a sucker, the sort of thing Francis Iles would have done with more subtlety and more finess, handled a bit too heavily, with unpleasant stripping down of unfortunate little people. A rich woman, in middle age, tries to rebuild her life on a beautiful lonely estate in Wales. Her need for romantic fulfillment makes her an easy mark for lusty, crude Local Master of Hounds, who takes all she has to offer, and leaves her when he has broken her health and her fortune. Step by step, it leads to murder. Capably handled, but not quite good enough to ride over the unsavory aspects.
