THE SYCAMORE TREE

A newcomer was welcomed in HOSTAGES TO FORTUNE. Here's her second book, in many ways an advance over the first, and revealing the art of a story teller, where the earlier book road autobiographically. The childhood and youth of Howell, younger son of the Combes, and suffering from an inferiority complex where his brother is concerned. Is beautifully handled. Good characterization -- a very real family picture -- the setting before, during and after the war. The book is not, perhaps, as well sustained as the other, but on the whole it has qualities that will appeal to a wider audience.
