A New York state peddler takes his son with him in 1859 and the account of their adventures moves pleasantly and makes a point where it makes a sale. Mr. Messenger, a farmer who has earned his family's disapproval by deciding to peddle every spring and summer, decides to take 11 year old George, different from his dozen brothers and sisters, with him. As they start out, his wise father gives George his peddling philosophy: a peddler leaves more than goods; he leaves news and something to think about. And as they go- up to Canada and around Buffalo- helping some runaway slaves escape, staying with an old Indian friend, warding off fire and storm and robbers- there is the satisfaction of fully realized experiences. When they return George has also learned that his adventures have enriched him far more than they will impress others.
