THE VIKINGS

The story of Eric the Red and the explorations of his son, Lief Ericson, dramatized with a free, free hand. Beginning with the boyhood of Lief, the story tells of Eric the Red's enforced journey away from his Iceland home to explore the southwest coast of Greenland and Lief's discovery of land across the sea after adventures with the men of King Olaf of Norway and the king himself. Also touched upon are the subsequent trips to Vinland, presumably the northeast coast of America, by Lief's brother-in-law and an adventurer named Thorfinn Karlsefni. There is still disagreement among scholars as to exactly where Lief's party landed -- this author assumed it to be without doubt the shore of North America. As always a fascinating tale, but the characterization is slim indeed and the dialogue is hardly aided by the neutral, cinema speech of our own time: (ex. ""What's all this row?"").
