The young visitor to Japan would be well prepared and alert to special sights and customs after a trip through this short book. Although it is simply written enough for 3rd and 4th grade readers, an adult reader would probably be necessary for the book's best use convincing youngsters that the italicized Japanese words in the text are pronounced as they are spelled. The kinds of clothing and food, the transportation, and the entertainment to be encountered in Tokyo are well explained in the brief text and caught in the clear, blocky black and white illustrations. The buildings (the variety of architecture) and the religions (and their varieties, too) are also mentioned. Excellent for the young traveller and for study units on Foreign countries in early grades.
