Another earnest undertaking for Scotland Yard's Tom Pollard and sidecick Inspector Toye--this time helping some rural police with the drowning-death mystery of Edward Tuke, a young American who came to England on business. . . but also to find his British roots. Among the suspects: the genealogist whom Tuke intended to consult; the genealogist's nosy, social-climbing wife; Rodney and Amaryllis Kenway-Potter, who own the estate on which Tuke died; and Ella Rawlings, a local folklore enthusiast who guided Tuke to the Kenway-Potter manor. Pollard and Toye do a painstaking job on the cold trail; the case is complicated by a local feud, bigamy, arson, plus another death from six years before; and, moving at a snail's pace, this is decent traditional Scotland Yard-ing for those who like solid and don't mind stolid.
