Not as much of a ""pop"" collection as in previous years, with the left-ists and locale-ists taking the lead as is the trend in this field today. The three prize stories are coincidentally enough regional and dealing with children: the authors, Faulkner, James Still, and David Cornel de Jong. Other familiar names are Caroline Gordon, Irwin Shaw, Charles Cooke, Dorothy Baker, Millen Brand, Kay Boyle, and Ellis St. Joseph but the story-level on the whole is not as high as one would expect. Nevertheless, a more readable group than in the O'Brien collections and a standard item for libraries, study groups, etc.
