The life of the Gil Grahams is measured out in anniversaries, amply celebrated here from their tenth in the 1920's (with fond reminiscences of the earlier ones). As the years turn, the children come and grow up, seeing them into the middle years and the next generation to the late years when Gil retires. The story rolls with the generations: prom queen Jill writes a comic strip, won't break up Stan Morgan's marriage; quiet Laura Lee marries a man for his child and arranges a divorce when he proves unworthy; steady Tom marries happily and provides grandchildren; dashing Dick survives Pearl Harbor only to end his life a crippled accident victim. Meantime, the old folks converse cosily in what reads like an exercise in English grammar, and the reader will have no trouble parsing the plot.
