HOW TO BE YOUR CAT'S BEST FRIEND

Just another cat care book--without thoroughness or flair. What it does have--all too much of--is other people's information and opinions, and footnotes to substantiate them. Randolph touches, briefly, upon some of the basics: selecting a cat; socializing it to domestic living; grooming; handling health emergencies; helping a cat adjust to new people, pets, and places. She gives equal attention, however, to such commonplaces as how to get a cat out of a tree (call a neighbor, or get a ladder). Other times she's just off the mark--as in her allegation that ""cats hate plastic"" (so you can protect your furniture, she thinks, by using plastic covers). The book's one substantive section, on nutrition, provides instructions for well-balanced, home-cooked meals and suggestions for retraining a finicky eater. Otherwise, better books abound.
