Greene has stuck her thumb into a number of standard folklore and fairy tale collections and come up with a dozen brisk, nippy tales about master cooks and bakers whose culinary talents get them into trouble but whose quick wits get them out. Besides the ingenious ""Woman Who Flummoxed the Fairies"" there is ""Clever Oonagh"" who saves her husband Fin from mighty Cucullin by taking the giant loaves of bread with griddles hidden inside, the lad who is turned into ""Dwarf Long Nose"" by an herb enchantment, and the same Japanese ""Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling"" we met last year in the Mosel-Lent ""Funny Little Woman."" After each story is a related recipe for Fairy Cake, Nail Soup without the nail, Shrovetide Pancakes, an elaborate marzipan-decorated English Simnel Cake, etc., and occasionally a rhymed riddle with donut, pumpkin, etc. as the answer. It's all as light as a fairy cake and swift as Zeke Calloway's ""Perambulatin' Pumpkin.
