A sure hand with documentaries (Gale Force, The Killing Ground Squadron Airborne, The Big Pick up (all published by Macmillan) picks up the local side of a crisis -- here a Kentish town struck by small-pox. Steven Monks, almost en route for a holiday with his wife, Julie, unwillingly stays on when he diagnoses one of Preston's cases as the dread disease, sticks through the whole course of tracking down the carrier, the contacts, and the spreading possibilities of contagion as some of those contacts contaminate others. His affair with Preston's wife, his guilt towards Julie, who gets a light case, the search for Preston's wife who has been with a man dead of the plague, are part of the search and protection that a civilian army carries out -- to the elimination of the scourge. Superimposing a demanding situation, this is strong on tabulation and adequate in its characters.
