Rambling, succulent pseudo-memoirs of fabulous and frothy characters, and contrived, devious situations in Louisville, when Paul was 18 (1909-10) and working in a construction company. Centered around the rooming house where he lived, this is the story of its inmates, the subdued, disgruntled head of the house, his pretty wife, the dapper, sadistic brother-in-law, the carousing, florid son, the flamboyant Spanish duchess in black and her beautiful daughter, a narcissus, Northern aristocrat, a serious apoplectic Irishman up from Boston slums, a sad, kindly old Jew who adopts a fatherless mulatto boy, a coy, precariously faithful wife and her suspicious, salesman husband, the crisp, level-headed daughter of the house, and numerous others- shady and well-limned characters. Paul builds around them a wealth of amusing or juicy situations of seductions,- the Negro lad by jazz, the servants by boarders, the coy wife by her loose girl-friend and her paramour, and so on. Here are seances -- brothels- stabbings- an ingenious confidence racket- a fabulous haunted palace- and all the stuff to make readable, albeit synthetic memoirs. Popular fare, near shockers, in Elliot Paul's established vein. He has a surprisingly large following. And he can write.
