It would be virtually impossible to make a dramatic human interest story out of the life of a man as reserved as Finland's great musician, Jean Sibelius. But Elliott Arnold has succeeded in doing what would mean more to the man himself, he has made his story reflect the beauty of Finland, its ruggedness, its strength, its fields and streams and woods and hills, and most important of all, the character and quality of its people, the vigor of its nationalistic spirit. And he has reflected all this in his picture of Sibelius and his music. One could wish there had been more of the music itself, that there had been a way to introduce younger readers to better understanding of the music, but perhaps that comes through better understanding of the man and his country. Beautiful piece of bookmaking, with fine wood cuts by Lolita Gramahan. A book of somewhat limited appeal, I should say, but with a chance for a plus sale to adults.
