THE MOUNTAIN OF GOLD MYSTERY

A pleasant but unexceptional successor to Mystery At Malina Straits (1963-p. , J-189) again has an Alaskan setting where the Jeffers family are fairly recent homesteaders. Dynamiting a tree stump, they find an old Russian chest underneath with message referring to the mountain of gold. In spite of the ominous warnings of Russian-Indian Joe Kasilov, they decide to try and find the mountain; so do their two neighbors, Blackie Dean and Cowboy Hansen, an old trapper, whom they had trusted. All reach the site at approximately the same time to find that they have been lured by a worthless ignis fatui and to learn that friendship--in lonely country--is more solidly rewarding... The cache-as-cache-can search will of course hold the interest of younger readers in a story with minimal values otherwise.
