The glory road which is travelled by Giannina Angelina begins in an Irish- Italian home in a Boston slum which she leaves for the mission where she is re-named Jenny Angel and where she attracts the love of Kendall Wyatt. An apologetic figure, Jenny marries him for what he can offer- and for which she gives nothing in return. His repudiation is complete with her first public appearance which wins the adulation of her audience, and the years do not dim her spectacular allure- in her red robes- and her success as an evangelist. Sam, a married man, offers her an undemanding devotion, but it is not until she has built her Temple of Light that she is for the first time vulnerable to a man, and she falls in love with a big-time hoodlum. His death breaks her- and in a last sunburst-she drives into the sea...... A reminiscent figure here, this scores- and underscores- the common susceptibility to spectacle which makes possible the rise and shine of a Scarlet Angel, grounded as much of it is by a pedestrian prose.
