It really is fun, this tell-it-as-you-go sort of story and picture book about Ezekiel and his family, Emancipation, Lil Plural and the baby Assafetida. The stories sound like stories told in rambling fashion to a group of open-mouthed small listeners, who keeping urging the story- teller on to ""just one more"". The incidents in the little darky family are illustrated with amusing line sketches in color, and there is a certain informality and folk quality of the born spinner of tales. The children have everyday adventures; they go fishing, they tote a Christmas tree, they make good friends as they go. Ideal for reading aloud, one or two or three at a time. Good display material in the form of window sets, sets of dolls illustrating the story and made -- by the author -- out of pipe cleaners, etc. As winning manuscript in the Julia Elisworth Ford Foundation Prize, the publishers are planning substantial advertising.
