There's a little heartache and a lot of happiness in this story of a Polish D. P. family who come to work on a farm near Middletown, Alabama. The Vodas- Mama, Papa, Jan, baby Joseph and their charge Tilka whose parents were killed in a raid- settle in a nice house on the Fosters' land, work, go to school, make friends. But it's the nearby swamp that captures Jan's imagination. There with his love for botany and flowers- he finds a rare Georgia plant Mrs. Foster's brother has wanted and plants what was bequeathed to him in a locket before leaving the old country- Polish flax. There took Tilka is lost when she pathetically tries to save the youngest Foster from a ""raid"" that turns out to be road blasting. But it's a turning point in quieting her fears and all is well.
