This is aimed at the man in the street, not at the sociologist and the economist, and as such is to be commended for its clarity, lucidity and precision. Although the author makes no attempt to fit his picture into current history, his conception of what the modern development, the elimination of classes and the welding of the masses into a unit, swayed by a leader raises the question of how long such a mass society can exist. He shows how this trend has developed in modern Italy, modern Germany. He claims that social stratification is essential to progress, since masses are kept at white heat, on an emotional pitch. He analyzes the dictator techinque, the protection against explosion, the use of propaganda. But he shows how there has been no precedent in history for today's type. A challenging and original approach.
