This book reproduces ""in permanent form"" the contents of the exhibition of ""50 Years of Modern Art"" which was a part of the Brussels World Exhibition of 1958, chosen for that event by the Belgian Executive Committee ""in close association with an international committee of experts from the individual countries concerned"". The text is made up of brief explanations of Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Constructivism and Suprematism, Metaphysical art, Dada and Surrealism, Naive Painting, Socialist Realism, ""The Independents"", and Non-Representational art. The remainder of the book is devoted to brief biographical notes, 32 color plates, and 305 monochrome illustrations. Interesting because of the world-wide selection, but even the color reproductions are disappointing, and the black-and-white plates are totally inadequate (especially in the field of modern art) for conveying any sense of the original works which they represent.
