FRONTIER SURGEONS: A Story About the Mayo Brothers

A slightly fictionalized account of William and Charles Mayo's education and contributions to medicine. Born in frontier Rochester, Minnesota, to a family that valued the pursuit of knowledge so highly that at one point their house was mortgaged to pay for a new microscope, the Mayo brothers were assisting their doctor father in autopsies--and even in surgery--by the time they were in their teens. Each in turn went to medical school; the resulting family cooperation was the genesis of the famous clinic that is still the ""largest private group practice in the world."" Both gifted surgeons, the Mayos were in the forefront of the scrupulous use of antisepis while originating and/or pioneering many other new techniques. Sometimes awkwardly written but well organized, with incidents chosen both to demonstrate the Mayos' character and importance and to interest young readers.
